SpiceJet flags off daily direct Durgapur-Mumbai UDAN flight
Durgapur is SpiceJet’s 13th UDAN destination
  • With the new addition, SpiceJet will now operate 45 daily flights under UDAN
  • First and only airline to connect Durgapur with Mumbai

GURUGRAM, June 25, 2019:SpiceJet, the country’s favourite carrier, today flagged off a daily direct flight on the Durgapur-Mumbai route, under the regional connectivity scheme, UDAN. The under-served market of Durgapur, is the airline’s 13th destination under UDAN. The new flight reiterates the airline’s commitment to augment connectivity between metro and non-metro cities. The route was awarded under UDAN III and is exclusive to the airline, thereby making it the only carrier to offer flight services on the sector.

In line with the aviation tradition to mark key milestones, the inaugural flight was greeted with a grand water cannon salute upon its arrival at the Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport, Durgapur. The airline also hosted a flag-off ceremony at the Durgapur Airport which was graced by dignitaries and SpiceJet staff. The launch was initiated with the customary lamp lighting ceremony thereby marking the formal announcement of the SpiceJet’s SG 6355 Durgapur to Mumbai flight. The first passenger was welcomed and gifted a memento by the dignitaries.

Mr Babul Supriyo, Hon’ble MP of Asansol, Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change said, “Enhancing air connectivity to Durgapur and Asansol was a promise that we had made to the people and I am delighted to announce the commencement of daily non-stop flights connecting Durgapur (Andal) to Mumbai from June 25, 2019. The UDAN scheme, an excellent initiative of our Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has helped provide air connectivity to the remotest parts of the country and I am elated that people from Asansol/Durgapur and the region around will have direct connectivity to the country’s financial capital and easy onward connections to the rest of the country and abroad. It will enhance the ‘Ease of Living’ Doctrine of our Government by saving both time and money. I would like to congratulate and thank SpiceJet for honouring my request and making this flight possible.

SpiceJet is India’s largest and most organized regional player operating a fleet of 76 Boeing MAX and NG aircraft, 31 Bombardier Q400 planes and two B737 freighters.

With the launch of the Durgapur-Mumbai-Durgapur flight, SpiceJet now operates a total of 45 flights connecting 25 cities under UDAN on the routes of Hyderabad –Kishangarh – Hyderabad, Belgavi – Hyderabad- Belgavi, Gwalior- Jammu- Gwalior, Hyderabad- Gwalior – Hyderabad, Ahmedabad-Udaipur-Ahmedabad, Kishangarh-Ahmedabad-Kishangarh, Lakhimpur-Guwahati-Lakhimpur, Kolkata-Pakyong-Kolkata, Jaipur-Amritsar-Jaipur, Delhi-Jharsuguda-Delhi, Hyderabad-Jharsuguda-Hyderabad, Kolkata-Jharsuguda-Kolkata, Bhopal-Udaipur-Bhopal, Delhi-Kishangarh-Delhi, Mumbai-Porbandar, Mumbai-Kandla-Mumbai, Hyderabad-Puducherry-Hyderabad, Jaipur-Jaisalmer-Jaipur, Delhi-Adampur-Delhi, Ahmedabad-Jaisalmer-Ahmedabad, Surat-Jaisalmer-Surat and Delhi-Kanpur-Delhi. This is the highest number of flights being operated by any Indian airline under the regional connectivity scheme.

Durgapur’s Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport, located at Andal, is India's first private-sector Greenfield airport. It serves both the industrial cities of Durgapur and Asansol. The new flights will further strengthen SpiceJet’s network in the state of West Bengal. The airline currently operates from Kolkata and Bagdogra in the state.

SpiceJet is deploying its Boeing 737 on the sector. With the new flights, passengers from Durgapur will be able to easily travel to a host of other cities both on SpiceJet’s domestic as well as international network via multiple onward connections from Mumbai.
