Gurgaon, 15 March, 2017: In a first of its kind initiative by an
airline in the country, SpiceJet, India’s favourite carrier, unveiled an extensive
apprenticeship program for engineering and maintenance workforce in its bid to tap
young and valuable talent across the country.
With the Indian aviation grappling with the dearth of quality engineers in the industry,
SpiceJet has pioneered a year-long DGCA approved enterprise to roll out industry ready
candidates. This apprentice program is a small contribution of SpiceJet towards
Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Skill India.
On March 15, 2017, in the august presence of key dignitaries which included Shri Rajiv
Pratap Rudy, Minister of State Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Shri Jayant
Sinha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation, SpiceJet hosted the convocation ceremony
of the first batch which comprised of 21 students (2 girls, 19 boys). The program which
commenced in August 2016 brings onboard raw students from various AME institutes across
the country. The students with an average age of 22 have already been exposed to Pratt
& Whitney facility in Hyderabad and will in further course visit similar facilities.
The trainees were offered a stipend along with the training and on successful
completion of the program, they will be offered jobs in SpiceJet.
The extensive training program encompasses three months theory based class room guidance
followed by an immediate exposure to on-ground experiential learning in actual
environment with e-learning being pursued on an ongoing basis. The training is imparted
by industry veterans with an average experience of more than 20 years who have been
exposed to all kinds of aircraft (from turboprops to wide-bodied).
On the occasion of the ceremony, Mr. Ajay Singh – CMD, SpiceJet said,
“Aviation is one the fastest growing and most exciting sectors in India. The sector can
provide huge employment opportunities for skilled professionals. We are delighted to be
the first airline in India to launch a skill development initiative that will equip a
large number of talented young engineers with the skills required for a meaningful
career in aviation. We are proud to be a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision
of Skill India. ”
The apprenticeship program will also offer an excellent opportunity for the candidates
to grow with the airline while enabling the company to endeavor new organic growth
prospects. The new consecutive batch of the yearly program will commence from March
2017.
